PUNTIAGUDO ESPADÍN CAPÓN ARTISANAL 750 ML

PUNTIAGUDO ESPADÍN CAPÓN – AA-ESP-01
Produced by Ángel Ángeles – Santa Catarina Minas

Among the many remarkable people I have met throughout my journey in mezcal, Maestro Ángel stands out as one of the most hardworking, humble, and generous individuals I have ever known.

Born in 1941, Don Ángel is not one to speak much about his personal life. Yet through the many conversations we have shared over the years, I have come to know a man shaped by resilience, dedication, and quiet wisdom. After separating from his wife many years ago and watching his children build lives of their own, he has devoted himself to caring for his lands in Santa Catarina Minas, Oaxaca—planting agave, working alongside friends, and tending to the properties that have sustained him throughout his life.

Don Ángel’s relationship with Destilados Puntiagudo began in 2020 during the construction of Rolando’s palenque in Santa Catarina Minas. He would often stop by to spend time with us, sharing a mezcal, exchanging stories, and reflecting on how the pandemic was changing life in their community. Over time, he became a reliable part of the operation. Whether covering the earthen oven, chopping agave, preparing fermentation vats, or simply lending a helping hand wherever needed, Don Ángel’s presence became essential at the palenque.

In 2021, Rolando called me with a simple question: would I be willing to allow Don Ángel to produce mezcal at our palenque? The site where he had produced his Mezcal in previous years had undergone changes, and he no longer had access to it.

When I had spoken with Don Ángel, he explained that he approached his craft with great care and discipline. He worked only with fully mature, capón agaves and produced mezcal only when he had enough ripe plants to make a big enough batch size, never wanting to inconvenience anyone. His kindness, humility, and unwavering commitment to quality made the decision easy.

A few weeks later, Don Ángel arrived to produce his first batch of 100% capón Espadín at our palenque. As a gesture of gratitude, he gifted us a portion of the mezcal he had produced. We assumed that was the end of the story. But a couple of weeks later, Rolando called again on Don Ángel’s behalf. Having heard that we were helping bring Rolando’s mezcal to market, Don Ángel wondered if we might also be interested in purchasing his production.

That batch is the very one we are selling now in the US.

After resting patiently for more than four years, it has finally made its way to California, Texas, and other states where Destilados Puntiagudo is beginning to establish its presence. We share it with immense confidence, knowing that its quality reflects the dedication of a true maestro. More importantly, it represents the kind of impact we strive to create.

Produced from cultivated Agave Angustifolia harvested after eight years of maturation, the batch began with 2,650 kilograms of fully mature capón agaves, which were roasted for five days in a conical earthen oven fueled by guamúchil and mesquite wood. The cooked agaves were then hand-milled using machetes and wooden mallets before undergoing a six-day, 100% natural fermentation in 1,000-liter pine vats with well water. Distilled in a traditional 80-liter clay pot still and bottled at 48.6% ABV, this limited production yielded just 291 liters, from which we bottled only 60 lts or 80 bottles 750ml.

The resulting mezcal opens with inviting aromas of fermented yeast and freshly baked bread, while the palate unfolds into vibrant notes of orange tart and lemon peel layered over subtle bread and yeast characteristics. Balanced acidity brings freshness and structure, leading to a long, elegant finish that lingers with the distinctive flavor of roasted agave. Medium-bodied and beautifully expressive, it pairs exceptionally well with lightly fatty fish sashimi, fresh shellfish, and delicate seafood preparations.

At Destilados Puntiagudo, our mission extends beyond bottling exceptional spirits. We are committed to supporting humble yet extraordinary maestros like Don Ángel—craftsmen whose knowledge, values, and traditions embody the soul of mezcal. By creating opportunities for their work to reach new audiences, we help preserve and celebrate Mexico’s living liquid culture, one batch at a time.

This release is a story of friendship, trust, craftsmanship, and respect for a lifetime of wisdom.

Salud!! to Don Angel’s long life.
